How trustees can obtain meaningful safety assurance

Moving beyond policy approval to evidence that critical controls are operating.

Policy approval does not by itself demonstrate that safety arrangements are effective. Trustees need concise evidence of material risks, critical controls, overdue actions and emerging change.

Good assurance distinguishes routine activity from exceptions and safety-critical failure. It also identifies the evidence source and the person responsible for corrective action.

Board reporting should remain proportionate, but it must be capable of showing whether the organisation is improving or merely generating documents.
